Ex-Rutgers student sentenced in webcam spy case.Dharun Ravi faced 10 years in prison for digital surveillance that let to his college roommate's suicide. He got 30 days-much to the surprise of some legal experts, who felt the case would set a precedent for electronic spying.I would not have been surprised if the court had given substantially more time,Eric Nemecek, co-chair of the American Bar Association's Criminal Justice Cybercrime Committee, said after Monday's sentencing in New Jersey.Ravi, 20, a former Rutgers University student, was convicted in March of anti-gay intimidation, invasion of privacy and several other crimes after using his webcam to watch his gay roommate, Tyler Clementi, kiss another man.The case made headlines in September 2010, when Clementi killed himself after learning he had been spied upon.Shayla Thiel-Stern, who researches youth and digital media at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, says the ruling still carries an important message about electronic harassment-namely, that such crimes carry legal consequences.

But that message might not get out to the right audience, she said.I'm not sure that that many young people who are cyberbullies are paying close attention to the legal ramifications of this case, she says. They don't follow the mainstream media.New Jersey State Superior Court Judge Glenn Berman told Ravi during the sentencing, I heard this jury say guilty 288 times-24 questions, 12 jurors, that's the multiplication. And I haven't heard you apologize once.Berman also ordered Ravi to serve three years of probation, get counseling, complete 300 hours of community service and pay $10,000 in fines.The impact of the case will be modest,said Orin Kerr, a computer-crime specialist at the George Washington University law school in Washington, D.C.But it's among the first of what he expects to be a flood of such cases as people do more questionable things online.
